Camp Time! Overnight Experiences at Evergreen
September 23rd, 2022
Overnight trips are a favorite and impactful part of the Evergreen experience. Like so much else, they were largely on hold for the last few years, so now that trips can happen again, we're making the most of it! In the last few weeks, both 5th and 6th grades have had overnight camp experiences, and 4th grade's is coming up next week. (Younger grades will have camp outings in the spring, and 8th grade is busy with a slate of other activities in preparation for their four-week Global Studies Trip at the end of the year.)
These trips are great for building community and forging deeper relationships in these grades, as well as helping to establish a tone for the rest of the year. In addition to having fun and hanging out together away from school, camp is also about developing flexibility, stretching comfort zones, and challenging yourself to try new things!
Sixth grade had a fun-filled few days at YMCA Camp Seymour near Gig Harbor, where they tried out classes in rock climbing, ornithology, squid dissection and more, plus a giant game of basketball and an (optional) morning polar plunge! Students finished up their camp time with hiking and an overnight in tents. The 5th graders went to the Northwest Maritime Center in Port Townsend, where they learned a lot about wooden boat building and the Puget Sound marine environment.
