Dia de los Muertos in 8th Grade Spanish

November 2nd, 2023

Along with studying the language itself, world language classes at Evergreen learn about different cultures where the language is spoken as well. And this past week, Spanish classes at all different levels have been learning about the Dia de los Muertos celebration and traditions and working on projects related to the holiday, including needle felting brightly colored skulls, making puppets, and for the 8th graders, creating a life-sized “La Catrina” skeleton figure!

Students started by learning about the history of La Catrina, which is related to Mexican artists José Guadalupe Posada and Diego Rivera, and eventually led to La Catrina’s presence at many Day of the Dead celebrations and imagery. They then collaborated in groups to create different parts of the skeleton in the BIG Lab makerspace. Spanish teacher Dana Webster said, "They were incredibly inventive, creative, and engaged throughout the project and it turned out amazing!"
