Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in 2nd Grade
January 18th, 2023
In preparation for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, this 2nd grade class had a thoughtful and involved discussion about Dr. King and some of his impactful quotes. While their teacher had a project in mind, the students had their own ideas. The more they discussed, the more they had to say, and in the end, they lobbied their teacher to let them spend more time and create these larger artworks. They spent that day's choice time working hard, and were proud of the results!
Here are the quotations they talked about:
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
"If we are to have peace on earth, our loyalties must become ecumenical rather than sectional. Our loyalties must transcend our race, our tribe, our class, and our nation; and this means we must develop a world perspective."
"Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend."
"I have decided to stick to love ... hate is too great a burden to bear."
