Social Justice Day 2024
October 11th, 2024
Yesterday, Upper Division students (grades 4-8) participated in our fourth annual Social Justice Day, and it was a resounding success. In just a few years, SJD has become a valued tradition at Evergreen—a day for students and faculty to step back from their routine and dedicate the whole day to different ways of thinking about topics related to social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion. There were guest performances, seminars led by guest artists specifically tailored for each grade, and many different workshops for students to choose from, appealing to a wide range of different interests and learning modalities.
Workshops
Each year, the impressive range of workshops offered by our own teachers and TAs is a highlight. This year, for their two workshop slots, students could choose from many offerings, aiming to spark curiosity, introduce new ideas and perspectives, and perhaps lead to new ways of considering the world.
This year's included:
Family Feast: Food Justice Across Different Tables
Chalk Art for Action
What Is Neurodiversity?
The Price of Living: Understanding Minimum Wage Realities
Verbal Self-Defense
Product Design for Equity and Inclusion
Social Justice Paper Patchwork Quilt
Your Amazing Skin
The Hand You're Dealt: A Philosophy Card Game
and many more.
Visit this year's Social Justice Day website to learn more about all of the performers and workshops!
A fairly recent tradition, Social Justice Day has emerged in tandem with Evergreen's growth as a school community. Last year, we introduced our updated community values following months of consideration and input from many individuals, and this event embodies these, as does everything we undertake as a school. Following this year's theme of "Ripples to Waves: Small Actions, Big Changes," students will carry takeaways from today with them throughout the rest of the school year and beyond.
