Evergreen recently held our first annual Social Justice Day, and it was a resounding success! From an opening keynote by artist and educator Cinnamon Kills First, to an impressive slate of workshops and "masterclasses," all Upper Division (4th-8th grade) students dedicated the day to focusing on social justice. Topics ranged from poetry and dance as social movements to climate justice, how coding can change the world, food inequalities, and so many more. 

One of the highlights of Social Justice Day was having all five grades together at the very start and end of the day. To see our entire Upper Division community all together working toward a common purpose of building a more just society one person at a time encapsulated what we are all about at Evergreen. From the student leaders, to the master classes, to the faculty and staff workshops, students were moving outside of their comfort zones in positive ways that I trust will reveal themselves over the days, week, and years to come.

This day was conceived as an educational experience filled with creativity, fun, and reflections on what social justice means to our community, and what it means to build a just community one person at a time, by our steady commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and community. 

One of the highlights for me during our inaugural Social Justice Day was popping into the various workshops and witnessing all of the learning and community taking place. Our students were asking thoughtful questions, taking part in creative exercises, and just all-around immersing themselves in the day. It was so heartwarming to have 8th graders so excited to leave this as their legacy and already making plans to come back as alumni for our next Social Justice Day!

Thank you to the workshop facilitators, student leaders, and our facilities team, and huge kudos to Director of Diversity Lakaya Renfrow, Upper Division Head Stephanie Wright, and the faculty Social Justice Day Committee for organizing. We're already looking forward to next year!
